What is the primary difference between a light gear oil and a heavy gear oil?

The primary difference is viscosity. Light gear oils (typically ISO VG 32 to 100 or SAE 75W-80) are engineered to reduce energy losses from fluid friction in high-speed, light-to-medium load systems, such as automated transaxles, robotics, and high-speed machine tools. Heavy gear oils (ISO VG 220 to 680 or SAE 80W-90 / 85W-140) focus on film strength to withstand heavy shock loads in industrial reduction gearboxes.

Can API GL-5 gear oil be used in light gearboxes requiring GL-4?

Not always. API GL-5 lubricants contain roughly double the concentration of sulfur-phosphorus extreme pressure (EP) additives compared to GL-4 oils. While GL-5 provides superior protection under extreme shock loads, these active sulfur additives can corrode yellow metals, such as brass and bronze, used in synchronizer rings or bushings in manual transaxles.
