What is the primary difference between GL-4 and GL-5 rear end gear oils?
API GL-4 gear oils typically contain around half the sulfur-phosphorus extreme pressure (EP) additives of API GL-5 oils. GL-4 is intended for manual gearboxes with yellow-metal (bronze/brass) synchronizers, as high EP concentrations can corrode these components under heat. API GL-5 gear oils are specifically formulated for hypoid gears in rear differentials, where load and sliding pressures are much higher. Running a GL-4 lubricant in a hypoid differential can result in rapid gear pitting and failure.
Does my Limited Slip Differential (LSD) require special additives?
Yes. Limited Slip Differentials rely on clutch packs or cones to limit slip between wheels. Regular gear oils can cause friction surfaces to stick and release rapidly, resulting in differential "chatter" and accelerated wear. LSD-specific gear oils (often marked with "LS" or "LSD") contain specialized friction modifiers that smooth out clutch engagement. How does shear stability affect the life of differential gear oil?

Can synthetic gear oils extend oil drain intervals (ODI)?
Yes. Full synthetic base oils (Group III/PAO) resist oxidation and thermal breakdown far better than mineral oils.
