Moisture is the primary enemy of synthetic refrigeration lubricants, especially POE oils. Because POE is formed by reacting alcohol with organic acid, exposure to moisture can reverse this process (hydrolysis), breaking down the oil back into acid and alcohol. The resulting acid corrodes metal surfaces, damages winding insulation in hermetic compressors, and forms metallic soaps that block expansion valves and capillary tubes. Longhai employs advanced moisture-barrier packaging and moisture-scavenging additives to minimize this risk.
Refrigerant-oil miscibility ensures that the oil carried out of the compressor by the hot discharge gas can mix with the liquid refrigerant and travel through the condenser, expansion valve, and evaporator, eventually returning to the compressor crankcase. If the oil is immiscible, it separates and coats the inside of the evaporator tubes. Because oil has a very low thermal conductivity, this oil film acts as an insulator, reducing the system's heat transfer efficiency (COP) and potentially starving the compressor of lubrication.

These oils are designed with optimized viscosity profiles and anti-wear additives that remain stable at high operating pressures and temperatures without causing polymer degradation within the system.
We provide a wide range of viscosity options, from ISO VG 22 to ISO VG 320. The selection of the correct viscosity grade depends on the compressor design (scroll, rotary, reciprocating, or screw), the refrigerant type, and the operating temperatures. Generally, high-load screw compressors in commercial chillers require higher viscosity grades (ISO VG 120 to 220) to ensure seal integrity and load-carrying capacity, while rotary and scroll compressors in home A/C units use ISO VG 32 to 68.
When retrofitting an older HCFC system (using mineral oil) to an HFC/HFO refrigerant (requiring POE), it is essential to flush the system thoroughly. A residual mineral oil content of less than 1% to 5% (depending on the OEM specifications) is typically required. While POE can tolerate small amounts of mineral oil without separating, high residual mineral oil levels will accumulate in the evaporator, leading to a loss of heat transfer efficiency.
